Help on game consoles!?

Hi all,
I want to buy a games console but know nothing about them! (In short, the last game I played at any length was Duke Nukem on my pc back in the early 90s lol).
I recently played GTA 4 on the Xbox live and got so absorbed by it, I really wanted to get back into gaming but I don't know where to start…

I don't know the difference between an xbox and an xbox 360 (I think live is where you link up online). Someone offered me an xbox but I don't want to get it if it's really old and you can't get any news games for it…the same really for ps2 and the ps3!!!
Bit baffled by all the types…I don't want to get something that's out of date really!
I can't really play on my laptop because I only got it last year and it chugs along and plays games really blocky and slow!!!

Any suggestions guys?

I would too suggest the XBox, but then again people have different tastes, so I'll give you a quick run-over….

Go for the XBox 360 if you're into friendly communities and stuff like that. Sure, there is the big downside of having to pay for Xbox live, but with all the cool features you get, you really feel like you're part of something big. XBox also features amazingly popular and engaging titles such as Halo 3, so gameplay is also very prominent. Also, if you decide to go serious about gaming (clans, matches, scrims and all that) XBox is definitely the choice for you.

Get the PS3 if you're into graphics, game engines and games that can be classifiedd as works of art ;). Master features of the PS3 such as the Blue-ray reader are designed to bring you the best visual eye-candy around, and with the amount of disk space, the games run smooth and nice. Gameplay is just as engaging, with the community being relaxed about gaming and lacking the 'fanatics' the XBox 360 so frequently holds. The PS3 is the choice for you if you just want to have a nice, relaxed time after school/work.

Hope you found this answer useful!

I would recommend a XBOX360 instead of a PS3. Much better game play and equal graphics. If not a little worse. Overall, XBOX360 will be worth the money.

xbox 360 and PS3 is where its at now.

xbox original is so outdated that it is useless to spend the money to buy one. Halo 3 and Call of Duty are currently the most popular games.

Now to the console comparison.

Xbox 360: Good for online multiplayer, and many exclusive games. To play against your friends cost money though. But it is more popular than the PS3.

PS3: Free to play online, can be used as an internet browser, not many exclusive games, but extraordinary graphics. Can play blue-ray dvd's too.

Xbox: Multiplayer

PS3: Graphics

Hope this helps :D

go for ps3 dude,ps2 has graphics 17x lower than ps3,,
ps3 and xbox 360 are in the same league,,,
the only difference is ps3 is expensive and xbox 360 is cheap,,,

Nowadays, the three "new/next generation" consoles are Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and Nintendo Wii.

You can check out this comparison, or just google the three different consoles to find the one that satisfies your needs! http://www.cnet.com.au/games/hardware/0,239029706,240054900,00.htm

the ps3 is the most advanced gaming console on this planet it also has the best graphics etc
but all the new consoles run much better on a hd (high definition) telivision
and if you havnt played any games in years i think you would find the xbox extremley cool to play around with..its not that old

ginners2002 @ 7:07 am

Xbox 360 no question about it

Its cheaper than the ps3 and has a wider selection of games and some games exclusive only to the xbox 360 itself.

imasnappydresser2002 @ 7:07 am

Xbox 360 is a much better value considering the graphics and compatibility ( you can use a xbox 360 controller as a computer controller). I am going to get that when my dad lets me. About your computer, you will need to clean your registry and de-fragment ur hard drive.

haha u dont know my name @ 7:07 am

Xbox360 is good i got it christmas and now im glued to it so i recommend it good Quality brilliant shooting games car and football games fifa09 is good. most people ahve them you dont have to have live dont get xbox the plain one its out of date XBOX360

Go and buy a PS3 becasue Xbox 360's are crap, also you have to pay to go live on xbox where PS3 you go live for free

It really depends on the types of games oyu want to play, and the types of experience you prefer.

If you want the very best in graphics and control, go for the PS3. It is the most powerful games system by a mile, controllers also have motion control and online play is free (with your own broadband). Blu-Ray movies are another key factor, and PS3 is the only console that doubles as a next gen DVD player, but until Blu-Ray fully takes off, I wouldn't think of it as a cornerstone of purchase.

Recommended Games:
Metal Gear Solid 4 (Shooter / Stealth)
Killzone 2 (First Person Shooter)
Mirror's Edge (First Person Platformer)

If you want a console that's more affordable, but still with great games, get the Xbox 360. No motion control, but controllers are solidly built. Online play requires a monthly subscription to Microsoft's Xbox Live system. (Xbox 360 has a tendency to overheat and break, but you get a 3 year warranty)

Recommended Games:
Halo 3
Halo Wars
Fable 2
Mirror's Edge

The Wii is more of a casual gamer system. It's tiny, works entirely through motion control, and is surprisingly fun. Not great if you intend to play a lot, though, as the fun tricks get boring after a while.

Hope this summary helps somewhat.

Xbox 360 - New. Plays games. New games still coming out. Good graphics. Good online experience. Good grip controllers. This console i would say is more for people who are into gaming. Can play music. Can play DVD's. Can use memory sticks to upload music and photos.

Ps3 - I dont know much about them except that they are good fro gaming. They are best for sport games. Also they don't have many good games out at the moment, but they are making more.

ps2 - The older version of the playstation. Can play games, DVD's, Cd's etc. Not very new but still has quietv some good games. Quiet cheap.

Nintendo Wii - Very interactive. Good for people who play most games with their family and friends. Not for gaming, but really good for interactive gameplay.

Ok, there are basically three systems out right now.

X-Box 360: Has the most exclusive titles out right now. It is also Microsoft's counsel. As far as price and performance, it between the other two counsels. There DOES seem to be a serious glitch in the hardware that Microsoft has not fixed yet that causes random counsel failure, IE the red ring of death, but they have extended the hardware warranty on the counsel and I have heard they are pretty good about repairing the systems. It is also generally believed that the XBOX 360 has the best online game store and gaming, but there is a monthly fee for the service. It can play DVD movies.

The XBOX, without the 360, is the old system. It is completely retired and there will be no new games for it.

Playstation 3: The successor to the Playstation 2. It is the most expensive of the three "next-gen" counsels but also has the best hardware. (Note that non-exclusive games will use the hardware of the WEAKEST system as a base point.) Unlike the other counsels, the PS3 is also a blu-ray and DVD player. The Playstation online gaming experience is improving and unlike the 360, it is free. The planed number of exclusive games is steadily increasing, with several scheduled for this year.

Wii: Nintendo's latest counsel. It is presnetly the most popular of the three systems. It is the cheapest system, but also by far the weakest as far as hardware goes. It's selling point is its motion senstive controler. This is considered a family or party counsel, with many multiplayer games. Technically the Wii has the most games and exclusives, but many (most?) of them are poorly made movie/character tie-ins designed to sell to kids who want to play as their favorite movie characters. Beyond that many of the Wiis games are remakes of older games with their control scheme changed to motion control. It is also the only one of the three counsels not avaialable with a harddrive. But other than that is very popular with casual games, older gamers, and kids. The Wii cannot play DVDs.

My husband and I are old school PC gamers too from the 90's - I loved Duke Nukem, lol, as well as Ultima series, Doom, etc.

We just got a 2nd hand PS2 for free from my brother, supposedly for our 5 year old to play, and while he loves it, so do we! The graphics might not be as great as the PS3, but they are still really good, better than what I was playing a few years ago on my PC.

We got and installed a mod chip which allows us to play downloaded games and to really access the hard drive - this rocks! We basically use it as a media centre. It has been awesome!

We play for hours every night after the boy goes to bed.

If you get the chance to get a free/cheap PS2, I highly recommend it. Not much point in buying a new one though…. go for the PS3.
