How come most Xbox 360 games look better than PS3 versions? Is blu ray technology on video games a waste?
But the fact? I read in many gaming sites which ran graphics comparisons between PS3 and 360 versions of the same games, and the results are often quite surprising: most games look better on 360 than PS3. Call of Duty MW2, Fallout 3, Batman Arkham Asylum, to name a few… Oddly also, the 360 version of many games seem to have more content than their PS3 counterparts. Very few games put in favor of PS3, I couldn’t even remember such games.
How come this could happen? Are game developers being too lazy to push the BD capacity to its very edge? 360 seemed to have slight advantage due to its earlier launch, so developers might have more time to learn it. But it’s been 4 years after initial PS3 launch…does the excuse remain the same? Remember a while ago, when Gamecube version of certain games were often toned down or simplified compared to their PS2/Xbox versions, because GC proprietary discs simply couldn’t match the capacity of PS2/Xbox DVD? For me, it’s just too unjustifiable for a 10 GB game too look and fare better than a 50 GB game. Otherwise, we might as well accuse that PS3 blu ray discs are never contained more than 20 percent of its full capacity by third party developers (hence we don’t talk PS3-only games).
Crysis 2 will be out for both consoles besides PC, and it is said to have ‘the most amazing graphic we’ve ever seen’, means the required space could be much bigger than any today’s game (GTA IV PC is the most demanding space so far I know, about 16 GB). Theoretically, blu ray disc will have no problems handling such advancement, while we doubt whether DVD capacity is enough, if Microsoft is still being stubborn using DVD media. But we have yet to see again, will MS magic potion work again? Will the 360’s Crysis 2 also look and fare better than the PS3 one? Hell, if that happens again, then blu-ray disc as the future media storage is questionable. If the aging DVD could do better than blu-ray, then we don’t need blu-ray. Otherwise Sony does major breakthroughs to reverse the situation, we can therefore say blu-ray technology on computer is a waste.
What do you guys think? I will give away 5 stars for the best opinion
Your theory is true in some cases, but in the real world its not.
Microsoft does have a better development kit. Its really Direct X 9 that they are using to develop with, This has been around for a while and is easy to learn. Even more it makes it easy to develop a game for PC and xbox at the same time. Sony uses a different development kit. Its probably similar to Direct X but not the same. Thus as the other guy said, this leaves developers with two options
1. Develop a game from the start with the PS3 development kit, which means they would be developing the same game but two completely different paths.
2. Or Port the game over.
Because of cost it makes more sense for game makers to just port the game. Which does affect the final product. Now how the port the game is up to them. They could start with PS3 and then try to port it to Xbox 360 and PC, but it makes more sense to start with Direct X and port it over to PS3, which is what most do.
Second, if they wanted to use all that space they would in a way have to develop a bigger game. They can do this, but it takes longer then it would for doing a PC and Xbox game. So really you would have Xbox and PC games come out, and then a year later have the PS3 game come out. Again the cost of this isn’t justified.
This is why Killzone 2 took 3 years to come out. Now with that said, after the first development cycle is done, this time frame would cut down.
The last part is the blu-ray drive. Blu-ray drives don’t transfer data fast enough. This can cause problems when you need to transfer a lot of high end graphics. This is why more and more PS3 games have you install part or all of the game on the hard drive. The Drive just can’t transfer the data it needs.
Even more if you wanted to develop a 50gb game for PS3 then it would take you longer to develop. Right now that hasn’t been worth it.
