I’m going to get a next gen console, mainly for GTA IV. But obviously will want other games.?

I'm looking to play online with friends as well.
So my question is; purely for gaming, 360 or PS3?

Get them both!

Seriously, mate, I own both systems, and I don't really have a favorite. However, I will state that my ps3 gets the bulk of my playing time because I have more online buddies on the ps3 than on 360. Another reason I don't use the 360 as much is because of the "red ring of death" (which I'm sure you've heard of). While I've not experienced it, I have come close to it. Problems with my xbox 360 (so far): it freezes while playing.
If you are going to get it mainly for online gaming, it doesn't really matter which one you get if you don't mind shelling out the moolah for xbox live.

Bottom line: get the one that most of your mates have (whether online or in your personal life). Whichever you decide, let me know, and I'll add you so we can play together.

PS, I have GTA4 on the xbox 360.

360 is definitely the best console for online play. You do need to pay for XBox Live, but the service is far superior to the Wii or PS3's online service. Plus, you'll be more likely to find people who are actually playing online on 360 games.

I would get a PS3, It's more expensive, but worth it.
The graphics are awsome, and noticeably better than the 360, also the online membership for PS3 is free, you have to pay on the 360. Also Microsoft made the 360 cooling fan too small on purpose, so it breaks and you have to buy another o.o

Man…..I'm probably being overly biased here but you just have to go with the 360! I wish i could base that on some solid technical geeky knowledge but unfortunately I'm not very tech savvy. Its just this vibe i get that the 360 is superior. Most of my mates have them. Iv got one. I say go with the 360. I Purely and simply base that on nothing.

I would suggest the xbox 360.

It's graphics are not quite as good as the PS3 but it is definately worth it.

The xbox 360 for one is not as expensive.
The xbox 360 has been around for longer and the kinks have been worked out of it. It is a very reliable console and the feature of downloading old Xbox games is pretty awesome, just make sure you get the larger hard drive. It is that the PS3's lowest model, is more expensive than the xbox 360's "middle" model also and xbox 360's come with loads of offers for games and such.

There are also more games for the xbox 360.
The ps3 is hard to develop for and so they take a long time to come out, and the xbox 360 had a year ahead of the ps3 to develop games for it.

I really enjoy the xbox360, I love the arcade games as well and I do not know what choice the ps3 gives however.

PS3 is considered to have slightly better graphics, and its one the HD DvD war with Blue Ray.. However 360 is generally considered to have better support and a wider range of titles.

In truth, the best answer is probably: Get the console which most of your mates have.

Ok here we go, ps3 aint that good and plus it doesnt have that many exclusive game for it but where as xbox u have live(same as ps3 but betta), halo, and ps3 has had bad reveiws.
i did a poll at uni and most people had x box and they loved it, and x-box is much betta than ps3, ps3 is just hd and online improved. x-box has gone hd, exclusive games, betta online gaming, u can get a keyboard 2 chat and also a little microphone 2 chat. My opinion XBOX IS THE BEST!!!!!!!
